COUNTRY COMPARISON
BRAINSTORMING
- We think that Spain and Colombia
could have similarities in the scores.
- In power distance Colombia could
have a higher score.
- In Individualism both countries
could have scores in the same range.
- In indulgence, Colombia could have
a higher score compared to Spain.
INDIVIDUALISM
(The fundamental issue that addresses
this dimension is the degree of interdependence that a society maintains among
its members.)
Contrary to what we imagined, Colombia
has 13 points while Spain has 51 points, this indicates that Spain is not a
highly individualistic country, but its society does have more individualistic
characteristics and features compared to Colombia. Perhaps, this is due to its
history, individualism, it was the greatest flaw of the Spaniards: it was also
due to him that the country was divided into kingdoms during the Middle Ages,
as it was divided into boards in front of Napoleon, which painfully prolonged
those wars. In this sense, that is why it could be that currently the Spanish
each looks solely and exclusively for their interests, that is why they care
very little if they can have a beer in hand by the end of the month. In
addition, there, people are happier for example when they think they have
achieved their goals or when they can fully enjoy their personal life.
In contrast, Colombia is
a fundamentally collectivist country, so a person who is happy with his family,
with his friends, is a person who is going to tell you: 'in my life I am full.'
For Colombians, being happy is deeply related to social relationships. If
social and family relationships are going well, they are happy, more than if
the economic situation is difficult, if there is violence, etc., in Colombia it
is normal to hear a person say: “I hold on to the happiness that I have at my
children, which is what keeps them alive and happy. They are like candy to me:
as soon as I look at them I smile myself, they make me feel fulfilled ”.
MASCULINITY
Colombia
has a position of 64 points compared to Spain with 42, this means that
Colombian society is marked by success and personal effort, on the other hand,
what is considered a "feminine" society as in the case of Spain, it
focuses more on the quality of life of people and the care of society.
This
means that Colombia has competitive people, and more individualists. Spain has
a more cohesive society, with more gender policies for social inclusion and
being aware of its citizens.
UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE
Colombia
has 80 points in the avoidance of uncertainty while Spain is positioned with 86
points, these indicate that Spanish and Colombian society avoid the ambiguity
that can arise from the avoidance of uncertainty, generating social cohesion.
In Colombia this common thought is due to the conservatism that exists, the
extensive rules and norms that avoid open expressions.
This
is reflected in society with great planning, generating an order that is not
necessarily put into practice, since this whole concept is determined by
groups, which may or may not agree.
A comprehensive analysis of the cultural differences of these two nations! I enjoyed it!- Paul
